Seasonal Tips for Fall

  • Autumn rains, cooler temperatures and warm soils are ideal for adding trees, shrubs and perennials to your landscape.
  • Plants experience more root growth during the 3-4 months of autumn than any other time of the year.
  • Fall is the only time to add spring-flowering bulbs for splashes of color March through June with very little effort.
  • We specialize in bulbs resistant to squirrels, rabbits, woodchucks and deer.
  • Gorgeous chrysanthemums in full bloom will add instant color to a drab landscape.
  • Replace those failing annuals with flowering perennial plants. Sit back and relax next spring when your landscape grows its own stunning blooms.
  • Maintain a 2-3" layer of 100% bark mulch on your beds for moisture retention, weed control, soil temperature moderation throughout the year.
  • Remember to water trees, shrubs & perennials that have been planted within the past 3 years. All plants need to be well hydrated before the ground freezes in winter.
  • Fall is a great time to start a compost pile. Begin with raked leaves. Add fruit & vegetable kitchen scraps.
  • We have clean, rodent-free indoor winter car storage available. Call 468-1142 to hold a spot.
  • Now is the time to divide & transplant spring and summer blooming perennials. Take care to plant them as if you just took them home from the Nursery. Follow all of the usual planting procedures: incorporate Leafgro certified organic compost into the soil and cover the disturbed ground with 100% bark mulch.
  • Plant into the ground the perennials that you have been growing in window boxes, pots and containers. Empty and store terra cotta and ceramic containers indoors for the winter.
  • Keep fallen leaves raked off your lawn. Add them to your compost pile.
